- What sets Yoakum Air Conditioning apart from your competitiors?
I like to think it’s our personal service. There are several key areas I see we are strong in. As a smaller company I am involved at some level in every service call and Installation. We keep files and records of customer equipment and past repairs to build a history so we can diagnose and repair the system faster. We have a policy to schedule service calls in three hour time slots and call or text the customer to inform them of our arrival time. That way they can meet us at the property instead of waiting around in a hot house. - What made you decide to go into business for yourself?
I think a big part of it was watching my Mom run a business when I was young. She was a business owner and single parent in the 1970’s when it wasn’t popular for a woman to be the boss let alone a business owner. I admired her “get it done” attitude and her ability to work around problems in creative ways. I seemed to have picked up that independence and drive to own my own business. - What was the toughest thing you faced after starting the business, and what would you have done differently?
It would have to be hiring people to represent my company to customers who relied only on me in the past. At first, I didn’t have standard operating procedures and a company policy in place to give people direction. Now I make sure everyone understands what the company expects from filling out paperwork to the quality of workmanship and how to deal we our customers. It’s always a work in progress which can be confusing as the service business is very fluid. But our golden rule is to treat every customer the way they would want a service person to treat their mom or dad. - With respect to the Internet and changes in technology, what is the toughest part of having a business in 2018?
It’s the constant changes in search engines, ways of marketing and the barrage of people calling me saying they are experts and will get my business on page one of Google. In the past if you could afford a full page in the Yellow pages the business would come to you. Your cost was locked in so there were no surprises. Now you can spend thousands of dollars and not get a single call that turns into a job. The trick is to find a person the knows your business and can show solid past results. Finding a person like that is like finding a needle in a haystack. - What is the number one way you bring in new customers?
For my business that would be the Internet and referrals. Lately I have done some Facebook marketing that has landed some good jobs. However, having a Website that is managed very well by a marketing person that
knows SEO and my industry, is on top of my list for new customer acquisition. - If you had to look 6 months to a year into the future where would you like to see your business?
I would like to see my company running like a well-oiled machine capable of handling peak demand times with ease. I would also like to see my customer base increase by 25 to 30 percent within a year.
